Dr. John Schmidt has lived in Holland most of his life. After graduating from Holland High, he attended Michigan State University. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1966 and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1968.

After serving for two years in the United States Air Force Veterinary Corps, he and his wife Marilyn returned to the Holland area so he could take over the Schmidt Veterinary Clinic (started by his father Dr. Lawrence Schmidt in 1950).

Early in his career Dr. Schmidt treated farm animals, poultry and pets, but after a few years he began to focus on small animals exclusively. He is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Animal Hospital Association, Michigan Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Association of Feline Practitioners. He has served as president of and continues to be a member of the West Michigan Academy of Small Animal Medicine and the West Michigan Veterinary Medical Association.

Over the years Dr. Schmidt and our staff have attended many educational seminars to continue to expand our knowledge as new ideas, technology and therapies become available, (such as endoscopy and sonography). We have the technical capability to consult with various veterinary experts from around the country by electronically transmitting all of our testing data for their expert opinions/consensus on the best course of treatment for your pet.

We routinely refer cases to specialists as indicated without delay. If we are unavailable for after hours critical case care or emergencies, we refer to the 24 hour/seven day a week Michigan Veterinary Specialists located at 1425 Michigan Street, NE Suite F, in Grand Rapids near Fuller Ave. and Gerald Ford Fwy, whose telephone number is 616-688-5222.
